Infinite Family Tree Drawer lets you view, print or export as PDF ascending and descending family trees, from your existing genealogical database. The tool supports any software app or website allowing Gedcom export. The trees can contain hundreds of people and, respectively, dozens of generations. Infinite Family Tree Drawer is a complementary app: create and update your database using your favorite genealogical software or website, then import standard GEDCOM data into the app to display your graphical tree. No database editing feature is provided in the app itself, ensuring the integrity of your data.

Satellite images provide a wealth of visual data from which we can visualize in interesting ways. Land Lines is an experiment that lets you explore Google Earth satellite imagery through gesture. “Draw” to find satellite images that match your every line; “Drag” to create an infinite line of connected rivers, highways and coastlines.

Using a combination of machine learning, optimized algorithms, and graphics card power, the experiment is able to run efficiently on your phone’s web browser without a need for backend servers.

Line Detection

We used a combination of OpenCVStructured Forests and ImageJ’s Ridge Detection to analyze and identify dominant visual lines in the initial dataset of 50,000+ images. This helped cull down the original dataset to just a few thousand of the most interesting images.

For the draw application, we stored the resulting line data in a vantage point tree. This data structure made it fast and easy to find matches from the dataset in real time right in your phone or desktop web browser.

WebGL

We used Pixi.js, an open source library built upon the WebGL API, to rapidly draw and redraw 2D WebGL graphics without hindering performance.

All images are hosted on Google Cloud Storage so images are served quickly to users worldwide.

All this without any restriction on the amount of information you choose to display for each person: dates, places, events, descriptions, comments, names and dates of siblings or other spouses etc.

Revolutionary timeline! The tree is laid out horizontally, the left margin representing the present, and the right one the distant past (for an ancestor chart). Each person is positioned horizontally according to his exact year of birth, and a graphical bar is optionally drawn to represent the period he was alive. You can now visualize instantly those who lived long enough to see growing their great-grandchildren, and those who had not even the chance to know their own offspring; or those who gave life from the dawn – or till the dusk – of their adulthood; or those who were mowed in their youth during the war years… Directly in your ancestor or descendant chart!

Implex support: in many families, some people marry distant relatives, leading to duplicate branches in the tree. Maybe your maternal great-grandfather was the second cousin of your paternal great-grandmother? This means that the complete branch of their common great-grandparents should appear twice in your ascending tree… but Infinite Family Tree Drawer detects this automatically, collapses the duplicate branch, and draws a dotted line pointing to the remaining branch. This dramatically simplifies the family tree of royal families, where this occurs repeatedly and recursively!
